CIVIC EDUCATION

Civic education in Liberia during elections and post-election is yet to receive adequate attention that it requires, for this reason there are missing prospect to ensure that Liberia have sustainable peace. Post elections violence erupts after electoral process due to breakdown of trust between the actors in society that most probably have the potential to leads to another civil war. It is now time to ensure we address the task on hand; to ensure citizens of Liberia receive adequate knowledge about their civil responsibilities that will lead to peaceful co-existence.

OFL aim is to reestablish trust between the actors in society as a central objective. This goal may be achieved through our civic education program, which helps to transform the post electoral violence into a peacemaking process by improving the relationship between electoral stakeholders and the citizens.

OFL’s electoral civic education is most often about ensuring that democratic values are strengthen; that includes raising awareness on activities that will focused on topics such as basic human rights; the role, responsibilities, and rights of voters; the nature and powers of the offices to be filled in the election; the relationship between elections and democracy; the major issues facing the country; peace and national reconciliation.

OFL’s civic education program plays a critical role in developing a change of personality among citizens who have been affected by bad governance that leads to poor infrastructure, poor health care and poor education systems in Liberia. Thereby, setting of new goals and new values, as well as providing the opportunities to the various constituencies and to the entire population to differentiate a new social contract for a peaceful co-existence despite their grievances.

OFL’s civic education program provides a value-oriented training that can positively impact the preferences, interests, and behaviors of all parties which is very critical. Indeed, we at OFL believe, while voting procedures may sometime fall short, civic knowledge through compromise can always save the peace and electoral process.
